Uruguay is small, stable and unusually easy to deal with, and for EMM that counts for a lot. Montevideo is an efficient free port where goods can be stored, consolidated and re-exported without entering customs territory, which is why a share of our Uruguayan business is cargo in transit for Paraguay and Bolivia rather than for Uruguayan installation. Nueva Palmira, on the Uruguay river, is the main transfer point between ocean vessels and the Paraguay-Parana barge fleet. Buyers here are professional, contracts mean what they say, and payment arrives.
Beef, dairy, pulp, grain
Beef is the signature industry and Uruguay operates full individual cattle traceability, which is why its exports reach demanding markets. The plants buy slaughter lines, chilling and freezing, boning and cutting, vacuum packaging, hide processing, rendering and effluent treatment, all to export audit standard. Dairy is the second pillar, with substantial milk powder, cheese and UHT capacity taking pasteurisers, evaporators, spray dryers, separators and filling plant. Forestry and pulp is the big industrial story: two of the largest single-line pulp mills in the world operate here, and the plantation, harvesting, chipping, handling and port logistics around them buy heavily. Grain and oilseed - soy, rice, wheat, barley - takes drying, cleaning, storage, milling and port handling equipment. Rice milling in the east is a genuine export industry. Wine in Canelones buys crushing, pressing, fermentation and bottling plant.
Energy, standards, conditions
Uruguay generates nearly all its electricity from renewables, mostly wind and hydro, and the grid is clean and dependable - unusual in the region and worth knowing if you are costing a power-intensive process. The flip side is that wind variability makes demand-side flexibility valuable, so variable-speed drives and load management pay back here. Incoming power is 220 V single phase, 380 V three phase, 50 Hz. UNIT administers standards and Mercosur rules set the duty position. Spanish documentation throughout.
