Ground conditions change the machine
Soft alluvium needs shoring and dewatering more than it needs power. Laterite, which covers vast areas of West and Central Africa, is abrasive and hardens on exposure. Basement granite needs breaking or boring, not digging. Collapsing sands need continuous support. High water table work needs dewatering capacity designed in rather than hired in a panic. A schedule that lists one excavator attachment for all of those has not been engineered.

Wear parts, which on abrasive ground are consumed at a rate that surprises buyers - teeth, picks, cutting edges and bits belong in the first-year budget, properly costed. Shoring and trench support, which tenders often omit and inspectorates increasingly require. Dewatering pumps sized for the expected inflow. Operator training, and a maintenance schedule the depot can realistically follow. Where lifting is involved, the test certification the local regulation demands.
