Most donor-funded solar tenders name a standard: IEC certification for modules, a quality mark for lanterns and home systems, specific battery test criteria. These are pass or fail, checked at evaluation, and sometimes verified again on arrival. We tell you at enquiry whether the product we would supply holds the certificate the tender names, and if it does not, we say so instead of bidding and hoping nobody checks. That answer is worth more to a bidder than a lower price on a product that will be rejected.

Batteries, almost always, and usually because they were specified on price and then cycled far harder than their rating. Then charge controllers, from heat and from lightning-induced surges. We specify battery capacity against the real daily cycle with a stated depth of discharge, and we include surge protection and proper earthing rather than treating them as optional extras, because in the tropics they are not.
