The United States is the hardest developed market for a China-origin supplier to win, and pretending otherwise wastes everybody's time. Section 301 tariffs apply to a very wide range of Chinese-origin machinery and components at rates that can reach 25 percent and in some categories considerably more, and they are layered on top of normal duty. On top of that, electrical equipment is expected to carry a listing from a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory - UL, ETL or equivalent - because electrical inspectors, insurers and OSHA-conscious employers will not accept unlisted plant, and that listing is a per-product, per-factory process that takes months and real money. EMM gives American buyers the tariff-inclusive landed figure and the honest certification timeline up front.
Where it still works
It works where the tariff is low or the category is exempt, where the equipment is mechanical rather than electrical and so avoids the listing bottleneck, where we already hold a listing for the product, and where the alternative is a long domestic lead time. In practice that means food processing and packaging machinery, agricultural implements and handling equipment, woodworking and metalworking machine tools, concrete and construction plant, hydraulic and pneumatic components, conveyors and material handling, and replacement and wear parts. Food equipment additionally needs to satisfy FDA food-contact material requirements and, for many buyers, NSF or 3-A sanitary certification. Cargo lands at Los Angeles and Long Beach, Savannah, New York and New Jersey, Houston or Seattle and Tacoma.
Technical specifics
Local supply is 120 V and 480 V at 60 Hz - and 480 V is the industrial standard that catches suppliers used to 400 V. Wiring must suit the National Electrical Code, guarding must satisfy OSHA, and imperial fasteners and fittings are expected. English documentation throughout.
