Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is the most closed market in this section and EMM describes it accordingly. Trade is heavily state-directed, major purchases go through state tenders and state-owned enterprises, foreign exchange is tightly controlled, and private-sector importing is limited. Successful supply here depends less on price than on being correctly registered, correctly documented and patient with a tender process that does not move quickly. Cargo arrives at Turkmenbashi on the Caspian, by rail from China through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, or overland from Iran.

Gas, cotton, and state industry

Natural gas is overwhelmingly the economic base - Turkmenistan holds some of the largest reserves in the world, with Galkynysh the centrepiece - and the field, processing and pipeline infrastructure buys booster and injection pumps, high-pressure valves and manifolds, gas compression trains, dehydration and separation vessels, heat exchangers, generator sets, orbital welding and pipe-fabrication equipment and certified spares. Downstream the gas-to-chemicals, fertiliser, urea and polymer plants at Garabogaz, Mary and Kiyanly take process plant and handling equipment. Cotton is the main agricultural industry and state policy has pushed processing at home, so ginning, baling, spinning, weaving and garment equipment are consistent requirements. Food processing covers flour milling, oilseed crushing, tomato paste, dairy and beverage bottling. Construction and building materials - cement, marble, glass, aluminium - supply a very large state building programme in Ashgabat and the new Arkadag city. Water and irrigation equipment is critical in a country that is about 80 percent Karakum desert.

Conditions and paperwork

Summer temperatures in the Karakum exceed 45 C with persistent sand and dust, while winters drop below freezing - a wide range that argues for high ambient ratings, heavy multi-stage filtration and cold-start provision together. Documentation in Russian and Turkmen is normally required, and state tenders demand full technical files, certificates of origin and third-party inspection. Electrical service is 220 V single phase, 380 V three phase, 50 Hz.
