Togo

Togo punches far above its size in shipping terms, and that is the first thing to understand about supplying it. Lome has the deepest water berths in West Africa and functions as the region's main transhipment hub - a large share of the containers landing there are redistributed to other West African ports or trucked north to Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali. For EMM that means Togolese enquiries split into two kinds: equipment for Togo itself, and equipment staged at Lome for onward movement, which we pack, mark and document differently.

Phosphate, cotton, and a new industrial platform

Phosphate mining at Kpeme is the country's largest industrial operation and buys washing, drying, conveying, loading and bagging equipment plus heavy pumps and materials handling. Cotton is the main cash crop, and ginning, baling, seed crushing and oil extraction plant are regular enquiries. The Adetikope industrial platform north of Lome was built to add value locally rather than export raw material, and it has pulled in cotton spinning, garment manufacture, soya and cashew processing and logistics operations, all of which buy machinery. Food processing covers maize and cassava milling, palm oil, shea butter and water and beverage bottling. Construction and the cement and clinker industry take crushing, conveying, batching and bagging plant. Port and logistics operators buy forklifts, reach stackers, conveyors and workshop equipment.

Practical points

Togo is francophone and we supply documentation and panel markings in French. Installations run on 220 V single phase or 380 V three phase at 50 Hz. The harmattan brings dusty conditions in the dry season, particularly in the north, which argues for upgraded air filtration. Grid supply around Lome is adequate but standby generation is a sensible inclusion for continuous process plant.
