Suriname

Suriname is the only Dutch-speaking country in the Americas, and EMM supplies documentation, control panel markings and safety labelling in Dutch for it - something very few equipment suppliers offer and which matters when an operator has to read a machine. Cargo arrives at Nieuwe Haven in Paramaribo on the Suriname river, where draft limits mean larger vessels transship through Trinidad. Volumes are modest; the country has around 620,000 people on a territory mostly covered by rainforest.

Gold now, oil next

Gold is the dominant export. The Rosebel and Merian operations buy crushing, grinding, carbon-in-leach and gravity circuits, slurry and dewatering pumps, thickeners, compressors, large generator sets and assay laboratory plant, while the extensive small-scale and artisanal sector buys smaller crushers, mills, sluices, pumps, generators and excavator-fed wash plants in quantity. The offshore discoveries in Block 58, on the same geological trend as Guyana's, are at an earlier stage but have already started generating service-sector demand for pumps, valves, welding, fabrication and workshop equipment, and that will grow substantially. Bauxite, once the mainstay, has largely wound down. Agriculture along the coastal strip is the broad base: rice milling in Nickerie, banana and plantain packing, citrus, coconut and palm oil, and vegetable processing. Timber from the interior takes sawmilling, kilns and moulding equipment. Shrimp and fish processing buys ice, freezing and cold storage.

Specification

Incoming power is 127 V single phase, 380 V three phase, 60 Hz - an unusual combination and a common source of error, so confirm the installation rather than assuming the regional norm. The interior has almost no road access and much of it is reached by river or air, so equipment for a mine or a logging concession needs to be sized and packed for the transport actually available. The climate is equatorial with very high humidity and heavy rainfall, so tropicalised windings, sealed enclosures and good coatings are the baseline. Suriname is in CARICOM.

Check the voltage and frequency on the actual board before ordering, and say if you want the paperwork in Dutch. A panel nobody on site can read is a safety problem, not a translation one.
