Sierra Leone is served through Freetown, which has one of the finest natural harbours in the world - deep, sheltered and capable of taking large vessels directly. That is a real advantage for EMM shipments, because heavy single pieces that would need transshipment elsewhere in the region can come straight in. The limitation is inland: roads to the mining districts and the provinces are demanding, and that is where the packing and bracing effort goes.
Minerals and agriculture
Mining is the largest industrial sector. Iron ore at Marampa and Tonkolili, rutile and ilmenite in the south, bauxite, diamonds in Kono and the gold operations all buy crushing and screening, gravity and spiral concentration, dense media separation, slurry and dewatering pumps, conveying, compressors, generator sets and laboratory equipment. Agriculture is the main livelihood: rice milling is the single most common enquiry we handle here, with cassava and palm oil processing close behind. Cocoa and coffee in the east take drying, hulling and grading plant. Fisheries along the coast buy ice plant, cold storage, freezing and fish handling equipment. Construction and quarrying take aggregate crushing, block machines, batching plants and compactors. Water supply and treatment equipment is in demand across the provinces.
Rainfall above all
Freetown receives extraordinary monsoon rainfall between May and October - among the highest of any capital city - and the provinces are similar. Roads become difficult, construction slows, and equipment left unprotected suffers. We seal and crate heavily, recommend landing before May where possible, and specify sealed enclosures, tropicalised windings and proper drainage on outdoor plant. English is the working language, which simplifies documentation. Voltage is 230 V single phase, 400 V on three phase, frequency 50 Hz, with limited grid reach, so generation is frequently quoted alongside.
