Sao Tome and Principe

Sao Tome and Principe is the smallest market EMM serves in Africa - two islands, around 230,000 people, and a container volume that makes direct sailing from China uneconomic. Cargo transships, typically through Lome, Lisbon or Walvis Bay, which makes transit times long and part-load freight proportionally expensive. We are straightforward about this with buyers here: plan early, order complete, and group with others where you can. There is no quick resupply if something is missing.

Cocoa above all

Sao Tome grows some of the finest cocoa in the world and the whole value chain is a live market for us: fermentation boxes and systems, solar and mechanical dryers, winnowers, roasters, grinders, conches, tempering and moulding plant, and packaging. Several of the island cooperatives have moved into finished chocolate, which needs considerably more equipment than bean export does, and that shift is where most of our enquiries now come from. Coffee, palm oil, pepper and coconut processing follow the same pattern at smaller scale. Fisheries buy ice machines, cold rooms, freezers and handling equipment. Water and power are standing constraints, so borehole and surface pumps, treatment, solar arrays with storage and diesel generator sets are regular orders. Construction takes block machines, mixers and tools.

What to specify

The islands are equatorial - hot, very humid, high rainfall - and corrosion and mould are genuine enemies of machinery here. Tropicalised windings, sealed enclosures, marine coatings and stainless contact surfaces for food equipment are the baseline. There is no manufacturer service network, so mechanical simplicity and a full spares kit matter more than sophistication. Portuguese documentation is available and generally needed. Power is 50 Hz, 220 V single phase and 380 V across three phase, with a small grid and frequent interruption.
