Mozambique

Mozambique gives EMM three usable gateways and they serve three different countries' worth of hinterland. Maputo handles the south and the South African and Eswatini border trade, Beira is the corridor to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, and Nacala serves the north and northern Malawi. Pemba has grown with the Cabo Delgado gas development. Choosing the right port is the first thing we settle with a Mozambican buyer, because the wrong one can add a thousand kilometres of road.

Industry and projects

Natural gas in Cabo Delgado and the Rovuma basin has driven demand for pumps, valves, compressors, generator sets, welding and pipe-fitting plant, site accommodation services and heavy workshop equipment, and the supply-chain businesses around it buy constantly. Coal at Moatize and the aluminium smelter at Mozal anchor the heavy industrial base, with conveying, crushing and materials handling alongside. Agro-processing covers cashew shelling, which is historically central here, plus sugar at Xinavane and Marromeu, cotton ginning, maize milling and oil expelling. Fisheries, especially prawn, take ice, freezing and cold storage. Construction demand is strong in Maputo, Nacala and Pemba.

Weather and standards

The coast takes tropical cyclones - Idai and Kenneth in 2019 and Freddy in 2023 were not unusual events so much as severe examples of a normal hazard. That affects how we pack and crate, how we advise on anchoring and enclosure rating for outdoor plant, and why we recommend keeping critical spares on site rather than relying on a resupply during the December to April season. INNOQ administers standards. Mains voltage is 220 V, with 380 V available on three phase at 50 Hz. Portuguese-language manuals and markings are available on request and we would rather supply them than have an operator guess.
