Mauritania

Mauritania is desert, iron ore and fish, and EMM supplies it through two quite different ports. Nouakchott handles general cargo and consumer-facing industry, while Nouadhibou in the north is the industrial and fishing centre and the export terminal for the iron ore railway from Zouerate. Which port a shipment goes to is determined by the end use rather than by convenience, and we settle that first because the two are 470 km apart.

Iron ore, fisheries, gas

Iron ore mining at Zouerate and the railway and port operation that moves it are the largest industrial undertaking in the country, buying crushing, screening, beneficiation, conveying, stockyard and ship-loading equipment, heavy pumps, compressors, large generator sets and rail and workshop plant. Gold at Tasiast and the copper operations add processing circuits, leaching, pumps and laboratory equipment. Fisheries in some of the richest waters in the Atlantic are the other pillar: Nouadhibou buys ice plant, plate and spiral freezers, cold stores, fishmeal and fish oil plant, canning, filleting and packing lines and vessel equipment in significant volume. The offshore gas development has brought demand for pumps, valves, compressors, welding and fabrication plant. Dates in the Adrar oases, livestock handling and desalination and water treatment complete the picture.

Sand, salt and heat

This is among the harshest environments we supply anywhere. Saharan sand and dust are constant and abrasive, coastal installations face salt fog and high humidity simultaneously, and interior temperatures are extreme. We specify maximum ambient ratings, multi-stage cyclonic air filtration, marine-grade coating systems for coastal plant, sealed bearings and dust-tight enclosures, and we ship wear parts with the machine.
