Malawi

Malawi is one of the smaller markets EMM serves and one of the most price-sensitive, and the reason is simple arithmetic: it is landlocked, the ports are Beira and Nacala in Mozambique or Durban much further south, and inland freight is a large fraction of landed cost. We spend more time on consolidation and packing optimisation for Malawian orders than on almost any other route, because that is where the money actually is.

An agricultural economy, machine by machine

Tobacco is the largest export and takes grading, baling, threshing and curing equipment for the Lilongwe and Limbe auction trade. Tea in Thyolo and Mulanje buys withering, rolling, drying and sorting plant. Sugar at Nchalo and Dwangwa takes cane handling, milling and packing machinery. Maize milling is universal and runs from single hammer mills in trading centres to commercial roller plants in Blantyre and Lilongwe. Groundnut, soya and sunflower processing has grown with the push into value addition, which means shellers, graders, expellers and refining equipment. Fisheries on Lake Malawi buy ice plant, cold rooms and freezing units. Irrigation along the Shire valley is a steady source of pump, pipe and sprinkler enquiries.

Practicalities

The Malawi Bureau of Standards administers import quality requirements, and we handle pre-shipment inspection where it applies. Nominal supply is 230 V single phase and 400 V three phase at 50 Hz, and the grid is small enough that interruptions are common, so standby generation and voltage stabilisation belong in the budget. Foreign exchange availability can slow letters of credit, so we hold prices firm for longer here and confirm before despatch.
