Georgia has a commercial advantage that very few countries share and almost no buyer exploits fully: it has a free trade agreement with China, in force since 2018, alongside a deep and comprehensive free trade area with the European Union. For Chinese-origin machinery that FTA can reduce or eliminate the customs duty outright, and it is the first thing EMM checks on a Georgian enquiry, because it frequently changes the landed cost more than any commercial negotiation could. We prepare the certificate of origin properly to secure it. Cargo arrives at Poti or Batumi.
A transit country with its own industry
Georgia functions as the western end of the Middle Corridor, so Poti and Batumi handle cargo for Armenia, Azerbaijan and Central Asia, and the free industrial zones at Kutaisi, Poti and Tbilisi are set up for processing and re-export - which is why a share of our Georgian business is assembly and conversion rather than end use. Domestic industry centres on wine and brandy, where Georgia's eight-thousand-year tradition supports a modern sector buying crushing, pressing, fermentation, filtration, bottling and labelling plant. Hazelnuts, citrus and tea in the west take drying, cracking, grading and processing equipment. Manganese at Chiatura and the Zestafoni ferroalloy plant buy crushing, washing, furnace and handling equipment. Hydropower is extensive and growing, taking gates, valves, pumps, cranage and electrical plant. Construction materials, furniture and food processing serve the domestic and regional market.
Standards and terrain
Georgia's technical regulation is being progressively aligned with EU norms under the DCFTA, so CE-conformant equipment is increasingly what buyers expect, particularly anyone producing for export to Europe. Local supply is 220 V and 380 V at 50 Hz. The country is mountainous, with Caucasus sites at real altitude and severe winters, while the Black Sea coast is humid subtropical - two quite different specification cases.
