The Gambia is the smallest country on mainland Africa and a narrow strip of land either side of a major navigable river, which gives it a logistics profile unlike its neighbours. EMM ships to Banjul, and the river itself is a working transport route far inland - equipment destined for Basse or the upper river regions can sometimes move more sensibly by barge than by road. We ask where in the country a machine is going before deciding how to pack and route it.
Groundnuts, fish, and re-export trade
Groundnuts are the historic export and the processing chain - shelling, grading, decorticating, expelling, oil refining and packaging - remains the most established industrial demand. Fisheries are a major earner, with Atlantic and river catch supporting ice plant, cold stores, freezing tunnels, fish processing, smoking and packing equipment at Banjul and along the coast. Horticulture for the European winter market takes grading, washing, packing and cold chain equipment. Rice and millet milling, cashew processing, sesame cleaning and palm oil are the other agro-industrial lines. Tourism, which is relatively large for the country's size, buys commercial laundry, kitchen, refrigeration, HVAC and pool plant. Banjul's long-standing role in regional re-export trade means warehouse, handling and weighing equipment is a steady category. Construction takes block machines, mixers and site tooling.
Specification notes
English is the working language, which simplifies documentation. Voltage is 230 V single phase, 400 V on three phase, frequency 50 Hz, UK-pattern outlets, and the grid is small with frequent interruption, so standby generation and voltage stabilisation belong in most specifications. The coast is humid and salt-exposed, calling for marine-grade coatings on anything near the shore; the upper river is hot and dry with harmattan dust in season. The Gambia Standards Bureau administers import standards.
