The Falkland Islands is the smallest and most remote destination EMM supplies anywhere, and planning is almost the whole job. There are around 3,600 residents, the port facility at Stanley has limited handling capability, and scheduled sailings are infrequent - cargo normally routes through Montevideo or from the United Kingdom, which means lead times measured in months rather than weeks. We treat an order here as a single complete package: the machine, every consumable it needs for a year or two, and a full spares kit, all in one shipment. There is no second chance to add a forgotten item.
Squid, wool, and keeping the lights on
Commercial fishing is overwhelmingly the economic base, with the loligo and illex squid fisheries the main activity, and the shore-side demand is for ice plant, blast and plate freezers, cold stores, grading and handling equipment, box washing, packing and net and gear handling. Sheep farming across the camp supports wool - shearing plant, wool presses, grading tables and handling equipment - along with abattoir and chilling plant for the local meat trade. Because there is no grid in the conventional sense across the islands and settlements run largely on their own generation, diesel generating sets, wind turbines, inverters, battery storage and fuel handling equipment are a constant requirement. Water supply and treatment, waste handling, construction plant for the Stanley building programme, and vehicle and marine workshop equipment make up the rest.
Designing for the conditions
This is a cold, treeless, exceptionally windy maritime environment in the South Atlantic - persistent high winds, driven salt spray, horizontal rain and temperatures that rarely rise far but seldom fall very low either. Wind loading on anything outdoors is the governing structural case, and salt corrosion is relentless. Everything we send here gets a duplex paint system, stainless or hot-dip galvanised fixings, gasketed enclosures with anti-condensation heaters, and mountings calculated for the wind rather than the weight. Supply is 240 V single phase at 50 Hz with UK-pattern outlets. English documentation throughout.
