Eswatini

Eswatini is compact, orderly and easy to supply. EMM routes through Durban or Maputo, both within comfortable trucking distance, and SACU membership means the customs position for South African-routed cargo is straightforward. Volumes are modest - this is a country of just over a million people - but buyers here are consistent, the industrial estate at Matsapha concentrates most of the demand in one place, and repeat business is the norm once a machine has proved itself.

Sugar, timber, manufacturing

Sugar is the dominant industry. The estates and mills in the Lowveld around Big Bend, Simunye and Mhlume buy cane handling, milling, boiling house, centrifuge, packing and effluent equipment, plus a continuous flow of pumps, valves, bearings and wear parts. Irrigation on the cane estates is extensive and takes pumps, pivots, pipe and filtration. Forestry and pulp in the Highveld buy debarking, chipping, sawmilling and timber handling plant. The Matsapha estate runs food and beverage, including the long-established concentrate and bottling operations, along with textiles, garments, packaging and light engineering - filling and labelling machinery, conveyors, compressors, boilers, cold rooms. Agro-processing in maize milling, dairy and canning rounds it out.

Notes on specification

The grid delivers 230 V single phase and 400 V three phase at 50 Hz, and the grid is reasonably firm. The Lowveld is hot and humid in summer while the Highveld around Mbabane is cooler and wetter, so we ask which it is before finalising enclosure and cooling ratings. The Eswatini Standards Authority administers standards. Because the local service base is small, we weight spares provisioning heavily on first shipments and prefer designs a competent local fitter can maintain.
