Congo means two things to importers and EMM handles both. Pointe-Noire is the Atlantic port and the oil capital of the Republic of the Congo, serving Brazzaville by rail and road; it also handles transit cargo. Matadi on the lower Congo river serves Kinshasa and, by the long haul south east, the Katanga mining belt. We confirm at enquiry which side of the river the equipment is destined for, because the ports, the clearing agents, the inspection regimes and the inland distances are completely different.
Oil, timber, minerals
Oil and gas around Pointe-Noire and offshore is the economic engine of the republic and buys pumps, valves, compressors, separators, generator sets, welding and pipe-fitting plant, fabrication and field workshop equipment. Timber from the Congo Basin forests is the second major industry, and the shift away from raw log export towards local sawmilling, veneer and plywood has created real demand for breakdown saws, resaws, kilns, planers and moulders. Mining - potash, iron ore, and across the river the copper and cobalt operations - takes crushing and grinding, flotation, slurry and dewatering pumps, conveying, thickeners, compressors and laboratory plant. Agro-processing covers cassava, maize and palm oil milling, sugar at Nkayi, cocoa and coffee. Construction, cement and the special economic zones buy batching plants, block machines and handling equipment.
Equatorial conditions
This is equatorial rainforest - humidity near saturation for much of the year, heavy rainfall, and real corrosion and fungal attack on electrical equipment. Tropicalised windings, conformally coated boards, sealed and heated enclosures where appropriate, and stainless fasteners are the baseline. Grid supply is limited outside the main cities, so generation is commonly quoted with the plant. Voltage is 230 V single phase, 400 V on three phase, frequency 50 Hz. French documentation and panel markings as standard.
Say Pointe-Noire or Matadi with your enquiry and we will quote the correct route and inspection regime first time.
