Comoros

The Comoros is a small three-island market and an honest one to describe: EMM ships to Moroni on Grande Comore, with Anjouan and Moheli reached by a second, smaller vessel. Direct sailings from China are limited, so most cargo transships, commonly through Mombasa, Dar es Salaam or Longoni in Mayotte. Transit time is long, consignments are small, and we are candid with buyers that a part-container to the Comoros is expensive per tonne. Grouping orders and planning well ahead are the only real levers.

Spices and the essentials

The Comoros is a significant producer of ylang-ylang, and it is also a vanilla and clove grower, so distillation stills, drying, curing, grading and packing equipment are the most distinctive enquiries we handle here. Beyond that the demand is for basics done properly: rice and maize milling, coconut and copra processing, bakery plant, water bottling, and small-scale juice and dairy equipment. Fisheries along a productive stretch of the Mozambique Channel buy ice makers, cold rooms, freezers and small vessel equipment. Power and water sit behind everything - diesel generator sets, solar arrays with battery storage, borehole and surface pumps, storage tanks and chlorination. Construction takes block machines, mixers, compactors and hand and power tools.

How we specify

Assume a weak grid and no manufacturer service presence. Equipment needs to tolerate voltage swing, start on a generator and be repairable with ordinary tools and locally obtainable parts. We send wear parts with the first shipment as standard. The climate is humid tropical with salt exposure on all three islands, so corrosion protection and sealed enclosures are standard too. Mains is 220 V single phase with 380 V three phase, 50 Hz. French documentation is available on request.
