Central African Republic

The Central African Republic is the hardest country EMM supplies anywhere in Africa, and there is no point dressing that up. Bangui is roughly 1,500 km from Douala by a road that is slow and seasonally difficult, the river route via Brazzaville is an alternative in some conditions, and security along the corridors is a real consideration. We quote here only where we can see a workable route and a payment channel, we plan on long timescales, and we tell buyers plainly what we cannot guarantee.

What is genuinely needed

The demand is for the basics, done robustly. Water and power lead: borehole drilling equipment, hand and solar pumps, submersibles, storage tanks, filtration and chlorination, diesel generator sets, solar arrays and battery banks. Food processing is small-scale and widespread - cassava grating and pressing, maize and groundnut milling, palm oil expelling, rice hulling, and bakery plant for Bangui. Timber from the southern forests supports sawmilling, and the shift towards local processing rather than log export means breakdown saws, resaws, kilns and moulding equipment. Mining for diamonds and gold is largely artisanal and buys small crushers, mills, sluices, pumps and detectors. Cotton ginning and coffee processing operate where the growing areas are accessible. Construction takes block machines, mixers, compactors and hand and power tools.

How we specify

Assume no grid, no service network and no spare part obtainable locally. Everything we send here is chosen for mechanical simplicity and field repairability, with common engine, bearing and belt sizes, manual rather than electronic control wherever the duty allows, and a comprehensive wear-parts and consumables kit in the same shipment. The climate is tropical with a long wet season, so sealing, coating and moisture protection matter. French documentation as standard.
