Cameroon is the gateway to Central Africa, and that role shapes a large part of what EMM ships here. Douala handles the great majority of the region's seaborne trade, including almost everything bound for Chad and the Central African Republic, and the deep water port at Kribi has taken on the larger vessels and bulk traffic. So Cameroonian orders divide between equipment staying in the country and equipment that still has 1,000 to 1,900 km of road ahead of it. We ask which at the outset, because it changes the crating entirely.
Cocoa, timber, aluminium, energy
Cocoa and coffee processing - fermentation, drying, hulling, grading, roasting and grinding - is widespread, and the push into local grinding rather than bean export has raised the specification level. Timber is a major export and the sawmilling, veneer and plywood sector buys breakdown saws, resaws, debarkers, kilns, moulders and sanders, with policy increasingly favouring local processing over log export. The aluminium smelter at Edea and its downstream rolling and extrusion operations take materials handling, furnace and finishing equipment. Palm oil milling, rubber processing, cotton ginning in the north and banana and pineapple packing are all substantial. The Nachtigal and Memve'ele hydropower works and the associated transmission projects have brought construction plant, pumps, valves and electrical equipment demand. Food and beverage, plastics, packaging and cement round it out.
Language and conditions
Cameroon is bilingual French and English, and we confirm which the operators read before supplying manuals and panel markings - getting this wrong is a safety issue, not a formality. Imports fall under the ANOR conformity assessment programme, which we arrange in China before shipment. Electricity runs at 220 V and 380 V, 50 Hz. The coast and south are humid tropical with heavy rainfall; the far north is Sahelian, hot and dusty, which calls for different filtration.
