Brazil is the largest industrial market in Latin America and the most protected, and EMM is upfront about what that means. Import tariffs under the Mercosur common external tariff are high on finished machinery, the tax structure layers IPI, ICMS, PIS and COFINS on top, and INMETRO conformity certification is mandatory for a long list of product categories with no workaround. A quotation that ignores all of that is not a quotation. We give Brazilian buyers the landed and taxed figure, because the factory price is the smaller half of the number. Cargo lands at Santos, Paranagua, Itajai, Rio de Janeiro, Suape or the Manaus free zone.
Agribusiness, mining, energy
Agribusiness is the engine. Soy and maize crushing, storage and drying across Mato Grosso, Parana and Rio Grande do Sul; sugar and ethanol milling in Sao Paulo, which is the largest such industry in the world; coffee processing in Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo; beef, poultry and pork slaughtering and processing at enormous scale; citrus and juice concentrate. All of it buys handling, drying, milling, extraction, refining, freezing and packaging equipment. Mining in Minas Gerais and the Carajas region takes crushing, grinding, flotation, slurry pumps, dewatering, conveying and thickeners. Oil and gas in the pre-salt basins buys pumps, valves, compressors and subsea support equipment. Pulp and paper, with Brazil the world leader in eucalyptus pulp, buys chipping, digester, screening and handling plant. Plastics, packaging, footwear in Rio Grande do Sul, textiles in Santa Catarina and construction materials fill out the rest.
Voltage, frequency, language
Brazil runs at 60 Hz, and single-phase voltage varies by region between 127 V and 220 V, with 220 V and 380 V on three phase - so we confirm the state, not just the country, before building a motor or a control panel. Portuguese documentation, markings and safety labelling are expected and NR-12 machine safety requirements are enforced seriously, with guarding, interlocks and emergency stops assessed on inspection.
