Benin

Benin is a small country with an outsized trade role and a genuinely new industrial story. Cotonou has long served as the import gateway for Niger and for a large informal re-export trade, and EMM has shipped through it for years on that basis. What has changed is the Glo-Djigbe industrial zone outside Cotonou, built specifically to stop raw cotton and cashew leaving the country unprocessed. That policy decision has created the most concentrated new machinery demand in the region, and it is where most of our Beninese enquiries now originate.

Cotton, cashew, and the zone

Benin is West Africa's largest cotton producer. Ginning, baling, spinning, weaving and garment manufacture are all being built out locally, which means we are quoting spinning frames, looms, dyeing and finishing plant and industrial sewing equipment rather than just ginning machinery. Cashew follows the same pattern - steaming, shelling, peeling, grading, roasting and vacuum packing lines. Soya processing, shea butter extraction, pineapple and juice processing and palm oil milling make up the rest of the agro-industrial demand. Maize and cassava milling runs throughout the country at every scale. Construction and building materials take block machines, batching plants and concrete equipment. Port and transit logistics buy handling, weighing and warehouse equipment.

Supply conditions

Benin is francophone and we provide French documentation and markings. Imports are subject to a pre-shipment inspection programme, which we arrange in China. Motors are wound for 380 V three phase at 50 Hz, with 220 V single phase for light loads, with a grid that depends partly on imported power, so stabilisation and standby generation belong in a continuous-process budget. The coast is humid; the north is hot and dusty in the harmattan season.
